Vehicle classes

Class B

Motor vehicles up to 3.5 t gross vehicle weight, and no more than 8 seats, excluding the driver's seat.

With class B you are allowed to tow the following trailers: Trailers up to 750 kg gross vehicle weight and trailers over 750 kg gross vehicle weight, if the gross vehicle weight of the vehicle combination does not exceed 3500 kg.

Prerequisite: Minimum age: 17 or 18 years
Inclusion of the class: AM and L
Theoretical training: Theoretical lessons in double lessons of 90 minutes each
Initial purchase: 12 x basic fabric, additionally 2x class-specific fabric
Extension (with previous possession of class A1, AM, T or L): 6 x basic fabric, additionally 2x class-specific fabric

CLASS BE

Trailers or semi-trailers over 750 kg gross vehicle weight, but max. 3500 kg

Minimum age: 18 years of age or 17 years of age for accompanied driving.
Previous ownership required: Class B required
Inclusion of the class: none
Theoretical training: No theoretical training required
Practical training: Practical test required

Class A

Motorcycles - two-wheelers, whether or not with sidecar - with

a cylinder capacity of more than 50 cm³ or

a maximum design speed of more than 45 km/h (engine power of more than 35 kW or ratio of power to weight (unladen mass) more than 0.2 kW/kg)

Minimum age 24 years for direct entry motorcycles (21 years for three-wheeled vehicles)
Prerequisite Class A2, if under 24 years old
Inclusion Classes A2, A1 and AM
Notes With possession of class A2 for at least 2 years, only one practical test is required (graduated driving license)

 

Class A2

Motorcycles - two-wheelers, whether or not with sidecar - with

an engine power not exceeding 35 kW, not derived from a motorcycle with a power exceeding 70 kW

 

a power to weight ratio of max. 0.2 kW/k

Minimum age 18 years
Prerequisite No other class is a requirement
Inclusion Class A1 and AM
Notes With possession of class A1 for at least 2 years, only a practical test is required (graduated driving license). Holders of a class A2 driving license issued between 19.01.2013 and 27.12.2016 may continue to drive motorcycles derived from more than 70 kW within the country.

Class A1

Motorcycles (light motorcycles) - two-wheelers, including those with sidecars - with
  • a cylinder capacity of not more than 125 cm³
  • an engine power of not more than 11 kW and
  • a ratio of power to weight (empty mass) of max. 0.1 kW/kg
Minimum age 16 years
Prerequisite No other class is a requirement
Inclusion Class AM

B196

Motorcycle driving with the new driving license class B196

It will be easier for holders of a class B driver's license to drive motorcycles in class A1 as of Dec. 31, 2019.

On December 20, 2019, the Federal Council opened up the possibility for car drivers to switch to light motorcycles after a few hours of theory and practice. Those who have the driving license class B can thus also get the A1 driving license without an additional test.

Class AM

Light two-wheeled motor vehicles - with

with a maximum design speed of maximum 45 km/h and maximum 50 ccm

Minimum age 15 years

CLASS B96

Trailers over 750 kg permissible total weight and/or permissible total mass of the vehicle combination over 3,500 kg but max. 4,250 kg

Minimum age: 18 years or 17 years for accompanied driving
Previous ownership required: Class B required
Inclusion of the class: none
Theoretical training: 2,5h theory
Practical training: 3,5h practical exercise
A practical driving exercise on public roads

Upon completion, successful driver training will be certified.

No practical or theoretical exam required.

CLASS C

Heavy trucks over 3.5 t gross vehicle weight (no upper limit) also with trailers up to 750 kg gross vehicle weight.
